Keep the Secret There is one purpose for any review. That is to provide an opinion about something. The value of the actual review will depend on the knowledge of the person doing the review and whether it helps the reader decide the value of a product or service. I do not know all things, but I do know fitness. I started coaching age group swimmers when I was very young and by the time I was 19, I was head coach of the Jewish Community Center’s swim team. At that time I’d do the unthinkable. I’d usher 30 kids into one handball court and lead them in 15 minutes of bodyweight exercise. It was “unthinkable,” because it took valuable practice time in the water and traded it for “useless dry-land activities.”  I did receive heat for exposing these budding fish to terrestrial gravitational forces; that was until the little spawn began to swim faster. Then the parents and the other coaches wondered what this college kid’s secret was. Amazingly, the “secret” is still a secret.  Most coaches still insist that the key to ________(name the sport) is to practice________(name the sport) all the time. They couldn’t be more wrong.  Making them even more ridiculous is that if they ever do get the kids, excuse me…future champions, separated from the track, or out of the pool, or off the court, or away from the field, they put them into a gym with stabilized weight machines.  Even more ridiculous. How to Avoid Impostors

When I set out to learn “everything-there-is-to-know” about detoxification, it was not my goal to single out any particular detoxification program. Shower Twice a Year, Whether You Need it or Not...

Drink Water Like Your Life Depends On It...

When I was in college, one day a clinical professor asked us. “How do you know if a patient is dehydrated?” We began to offer the classic conditions associated with chronic dehydration. “Constipation.” ”Fatigue.“ “Joint problems.” “Digestive disorders.” “Asthma and allergies.” “High blood pressure.” “Weight gain…” The professor held up his hand to stop the flowing list of conditions or symptoms. Then he paused for moment and announce, “If you think like that you’re going to miss a large number of people who could benefit by consuming more water.” He went on to make his point, but this time his smile prepared us for something important and we could sense that his next words were going to reveal it. “How do you know if a patient is dehydrated?” he repeated, then he answered,“ They walk into your office!” That pronouncement did stick in my memory. Fortunately, there has been a large emphasis in water awareness since I got my degree as a chiropractor. However, his statement still rings true. Even people who know the importance of adequate water consumption, fall short much of the time. So here is a rule of thumb that we use in our clinic regarding water intake. Make it a practice to drink half your body weight in ounces of pure water. For example, if you weigh 160 pounds, strive to take in 80 ounces water each day. This is far better than the more popular one-size-fits-all, “number of glasses” approach. Best of all, it can easily be tweaked to suit your exact needs. For instance, if you are going for a two hour bike ride on a hot day you’ll require much more. Ideally you will drink enough during your ride to offset any...

Head Out of Sand

It’s important to learn stuff that makes a big difference in our life. For instance I learned that it’s easier to peel a banana from the bottom. It’s the way monkeys do it and it’s the way lawyers do it. No offence to monkeys, and admittedly I only know two lawyers that peel bananas the “correct” way but indeed it has been a skill that I will pass onto my grandchildren. We should all leave a legacy. Now, it is important to to take things even deeper than banana peeling when the stakes are high. Understanding genetically engineered food is such a topic. We truly need to take a few minutes and try to understand the scope of what this technology in food science is capable of.  I will write more about this topic, because the issues regarding it are not going away. In fact, they are weaving themselves into the very fabric of our lives and has already begun to effect our health. Your Desk is Dangerous – 5 Ways to Sit Safe...

It is great, I love the flexible schedule and the work I do. I would say there is only one downside to it, and that is that I am sitting at my desk 90% of the day. What I was wondering is, what do you suggest for not letting the sitting thing mess up my whole system? Thanks for your input 🙂   That was a LinkedIn message I received from a patient this week. You may have the same problem. Love your job, but hate the sitting. You may also wonder how you can make the best out of a bad situation. Maybe even at home you are sitting in front of the computer too much for your own good. What can you do? Here are my five suggestions that will help you reduce the wear and tear that sitting causes. Plus you will be treated to a Bonus that will get you thinking outside the box, or perhaps I should say outside the chair. Move: Your body was created to move. This is the one foundation on which a happy healthy body is built. At work, at home, or while out and about in your car, this is an important truth to keep in mind. Take breaks often. Walk, jump rope, do stretches, whatever moves you. Ergonomic Chair: The most important thing is to change position often.
